I’m obsessed with … Gram

I am literally OBSESSED with my Gram.

When I think of Gram, the following words come to mind:

  • thoughtful
  • adventurous
  • selfless
  • energetic
  • beautiful

The list could go on FOREVER. She’s so bomb.

One major benefit of moving to Chicago has been the ability to spend more time with family and I love spending time with Gram. We have a blast whether we’re traveling to Michigan for a weekend visit, shopping at Woodfield, going to the show, touring in London, playing dominoes at the kitchen table, dancing the night away at a wedding, or seeing the penguins in Antarctica.

Gram is so legit.

At the age of 82, Gram went snorkeling for the first time this past summer in Costa Rica — hands down one of my fave Gram memories. As I’m taking a break from swimming with the fishes, I look up and regardless of the fact that Gram is clinging to the guide quite literally … she was crushing it, a true rockstar snorkeler.

Basically I’m the world’s luckiest granddaughter.

Have I mentioned she can cook? Nothing like a home-cooked meal at Gram’s … which I will be enjoying throughout the duration of my LASIK and recovery. Yep, even though it’s actually a 24-hour recovery, I’ve decided I’m stretching it out a full weekend. Be jealous. Be very jealous.

Banana-Oatmeal Bread

Often times I’ll buy bananas and those suckers will go ripe before I eat them! When this conveniently happens, I place the bananas in the freezer until it’s time for some good, homemade banana bread. I usually go with Aunt Lisa’s recipe but this time around I decided to live on the edge with this Weight Watchers recipe. My co-workers would most likely agree with this decision as the bread was gone before I even got a piece… ENJOY!!



  • 1-1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unpacked brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp table salt
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp baking powder
  • 3 tsp canola oil
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 2 large egg whites, beaten
  • 3 large bananas, ripe
  • 1 cup uncooked old fashioned oats


  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  2. In a large bowl, stir together dry ingredients.
  3. Add oil and eggs; mix thoroughly.
  4. In a smaller bowl, mash bananas with a potato masher or fork.
  5. Add bananas and oatmeal to batter.
  6. Spray a loaf pan with cooking spray.
  7. Pour batter into pan and bake until top of loaf is firm to touch, 45 to 55 minutes.
  8. Remove from oven and allow to cool in pan for 5 minutes. Flip out and cool on a wire rack for another 10 minutes.

Chi Girls Weekend #recap

Girls Weekend. Love.

I live for girls weekends with my Drake Girls as you might have gotten from this post … or this one! For the past 3 years, I’ve hosted a Chicago girls weekend in January specifically in honor of Meg, Lin and Erin’s birthdays but also just as an excuse to get together with my besties. This year’s was amazing, per usual. Here’s a quick recap of our weekend:

Even though the weekend flew by, we fit a ton in — I loved staying in and catching up Friday night to take full advantage of Saturday. VERY Happy 26th Birthday to Lin, Meg and Erin … welcome to the esteemed club of twenty-sixers.

Friday Chi Faves: Goose Island Brewery Tour

They say you learn something new everyday. Yesterday I learned that this sign “&” is called an ampersand … and a few weeks ago I learned about brewing beer with Augustana College’s Business Club – my mom is their advisor.


Ever had a 312? Honkers Ale? Summertime? Great you’re already a step ahead.

Started by John Hall, the original Goose Island Brewery on Clybourn has been a Chicago staple since 1988. Chicagoans loved the beer so much that in 1995, John opened a larger brewery and bottling plant then in 1999 expanded to a second brew pub in Wrigleyville. Goose Island seems to have caught on as it’s now in 6 states and Europe. HOLLER! One awesome thing about these brew pubs is that you can actually watch the beers being brewed  as you’re sipping on your beer – brilliant! You can also expand your knowledge of these alcoholic brews by taking a Brewery Tour. Did you know that every beer is either a lager or an ale?

Added bonus is that the end of the tour is a tasting of 6 of their brews that I’d probably never had tried given the fact I’m loyal to 312. It was fun and educational … I highly recommend it!

We’re All Doing The Best We Can

I love following the Huffington Post on Twitter because I often stumble upon awesome articles like this: We’re All Doing The Best We Can. As I read the article I felt like he was writing my own thoughts (creepy, huh?) — here’s a quick article recap:

  1. Give people the benefit of the doubt.
  2. Don’t take things personally. 
  3. Look for the good. 
  4. Seek first to understand.
  5. Be gentle with others (and especially with yourself). 

So what’s the correlation with Workout Wednesday? This resonates completely with eating healthy, working out, drinking water, etc. It’s a lot to remember, to commit to and focus on. I’ll get down on myself for not enough workouts per week or eating dessert, but when it comes down to it — I just need to give myself a break. I’m doing the best I can.

I think we could all benefit from taking a step back every once in a while 🙂
